Aftercare
Proper care is just as important as the tattoo itself. To achieve the best possible result and ensure your new piece stays looking great for a lifetime, give it a little extra attention over the coming weeks.
Second skin (healing film)
Once your tattoo is finished, I will cover the area with a special healing film. Leave it on your skin for 2 to 3 days, and try to avoid excessive sweating during this time. Please skip intense physical activity, like hitting the gym or heavy cardio, for at least the first week.
If liquid or ink collects under the film, don't worry, this is a completely normal part of the healing process. However, if the film peels off significantly or liquid starts leaking out, it needs to be removed early. In that case, jump straight to step 02 :)
Film removal & first cleaning
On the evening of the third day, it's time to remove the film. Do it gently and take your time: grab one of the bottom corners and slowly stretch it downward along the skin, and never pull it straight out or rip it off. You can make this easier by doing it under a stream of lukewarm running water.
After removing the film, gently wash the tattoo with an antibacterial soap (e.g. Protex) and pat it dry with a clean paper towel (don't rub!). Avoid using a regular towel to prevent bacteria. Leave the tattoo to breathe freely overnight without applying any cream or ointment.
Healing phase & moisturizing
Start moisturizing the following morning. I recommend using pure shea butter. Applying it twice a day (morning and evening) is plenty, and the golden rule is: less is more. Apply only a very thin layer so the tattoo doesn't get suffocated under a heavy coating. Continue this routine for 2 to 3 weeks until fully healed.
During these weeks, strictly avoid direct sunlight, tanning beds, saunas, and prolonged soaking in water (pools, hot tubs, ocean, lakes). The tattoo may itch or flake during healing, but do not scratch it under any circumstances. If you need to cover the area in dusty or sunny environments, use loose clothing, a scarf, or a light bandage.
Long-term care
How do you keep your tattoo looking vibrant for years to come? Sun exposure is your biggest enemy as it breaks down the pigment. Always apply an SPF 50 sunscreen to your fully healed tattoo whenever you expect sun exposure. Keep the skin regularly moisturized with a standard body lotion, and feel free to use a gentle body scrub once a month to remove dead skin cells and brighten the ink.
Enjoy your new ink!
Now, all that's left is to enjoy your new tattoo for the rest of your life. Once it's fully healed (after about a month), I'd love it if you sent me a photo!
